Where to watch the sunset in Sitges: viewpoints, times and from the sea

In short
The best spots on land
Sitges' own tourism website, Sitges Anytime, picks three classics:
- Sant Sebastià beach. Find a spot on the sand level with the little Sant Sebastià hermitage and watch the light fade over the bay.
- The church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla. Its square, or the steps that climb up to it from the seafront promenade, frame the town's most famous silhouette.
- La Levantina viewpoint. At the top of the Levantina neighbourhood, reached along Avinguda de la Trinitat, for a wide view over the town and the sea.
In summer these spots fill up, so arrive a little early with a drink in hand.
From the sea: the sunset at anchor
From land, you watch the sunset with the sea on one side and the town on the other. From the water the view turns round: the coast is in front of you, the old town and its church in silhouette, and the sea takes on the colour of the sky. No need to fight for a place on the steps: the boat is the front row.
In summer the sun goes down behind the coast to the west, not into the open sea, and that's exactly why the view from offshore is so good: Sitges and the Garraf hills turn into a dark outline against an orange sky.
The trick is leaving in good time. Set off from the marina about an hour and a half before sunset: you reach a cove in daylight, have a swim (our guide to the beaches near Sitges has the closest ones) and are in position as the sun starts to drop. In mid-September, for example, the sun sets at 8.04pm, so you'd leave at about 6.30pm. Private boats with a skipper leave from Port d'Aiguadolç: see the evening options on boat hire in Sitges.
September brings the sunset back to a civilised hour: leave the marina at 6.30pm and the sun goes down right in front of you.

Sunset in Vilanova i la Geltrú
A few miles west, Vilanova i la Geltrú puts on its own show. The Sant Cristòfol lighthouse stands at the harbour mouth, and a sail at dusk turns it into a silhouette against the sky. In summer the sun drops behind the coast to the west; in autumn and winter it sets further south, closer to the open sea. Times are within a minute of Sitges', so the table above works here too. For two hours under sail as the sun goes down, see boat hire in Vilanova i la Geltrú.
Cloudy or windy?
Clouds don't spoil a sunset: a few scattered ones often make the best skies, catching the colour after the sun has gone. Wind and sea are another matter, and that's the skipper's call on the day. For the forecast, check the Catalan weather service, Meteocat, or Spain's national weather agency, AEMET.
